Bacteria are single-celled organisms.  Its basic structure is much simpler than other organisms.  They contain no nucleus and nuclear membrane.  Thus, their genetic information is contained in a single loop of DNA.  These bacteria may contain plasmid that allows them to be resistant to certain antibiotics.

Bacteria are categorized in five major types depending on its basic shapes:  spirochaetes, corkscrew-shaped; vibrios, comma-shaped; spirilla, spiral-shaped; bacilli, rod-shaped; and cocci, spherical-shaped bacteria.

It can also be categorized based on its staining properties, gram-positive and gram-negative.  This property in staining owes to the structural differences in the cell walls of bacteria.  Gram-positive bacteria retain the crystal violet dye due to its thick layer of peptidoglycan.  On the other hand, Gram-negative bacteria stain red or pink when washed with alcohol and acetone.  Gram-negative bacteria are often the culprits of common bacterial diseases.

Gram-positive bacteria include staphylococci and streptococci.  Staphylococci cause most hospital-acquired infections.  Streptococci, on the other hand, are considered to be the good bacteria.  They contribute in turning milk into yoghurt.  But it is also responsible for the common sore throat.

Gram-negative bacteria cause diseases such as syphilis.  Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum.  This disease is spread via sexual intercourse.  The initial symptoms include sores in the genital, followed by general infection.  A newborn have a risk for blindness when exposed to the bacteria as the baby is delivered.  As a method to prevent this from happening, hospitals implement spraying of silver nitrate in the newborn eyes.
